Grant was born in 1956 and raised in Auckland as part of a large family with devoted parents. Growing up on the Manukau Harbour with freedom to explore and interact with the environment gave him an appreciation for natural things. Holidays at the beaches around Auckland including Waiheke Is. as well as the Coromandel made him aware of the qualities displayed by nature and how they speak to the heart. Awesome beauty, wisdom, and power can be seen in the natural environment, and even love can be seen in that we ourselves have been made with the ability to appreciate and enjoy these things.
Grants 1st interest in art was displayed at primary school level where art and drawing became a favourite subject. A career in business took him away from art until 1998 when a move to The Coromandel and a change in circumstances once again rekindled a desire not just to earn a living but do so in an enjoyable and fulfilling way. Consequently from mid 2003 on painting has become his occupation. Grant is a self taught artist with no formal training. His style could be described as overwhelmingly realism and his goal is to reproduce in a painting the feelings you get when you see a thing of beauty, something that recalls a favourite place or a forgotten memory.
